Bone Grafts for Implants
In Blackheath

If you have insufficient jaw bone density to support a dental implant, your dentist may recommend a bone graft. This simple, routine procedure will help to increase the bone density and prepare your jaw for dental implants. While this can add time to the total dental implants treatment journey, it will also reduce the risk of dental implant failure.

What is bone grafting?

Bone grafting involves making a small opening in your gum and jaw bone. Your dentist can either place a piece of bone taken from elsewhere in your body or place an artificial or bovine graft. Your jaw bone heals around the graft and becomes stronger. Once healed, the jaw bone will be able to support a dental implant and there is a lower chance of implant failure.

Am I a suitable candidate?

To be a suitable candidate for bone grafting you will need to have a good standard of oral health and be able to follow aftercare advice. The success of the bone graft will depend on the area having the right healing conditions. Some health conditions could make you an unsuitable candidate for bone grafting, but your dentist will explore this during your consultation. All treatment can be carried out from our Blackheath dental practice, offering you peace of mind and convenience.

The bone graft treatment journey

Wondering what to expect from your bone graft treatment? This is an example treatment journey to help you understand the steps in the process.

1

Step one

Free Consultation

Book a free consultation to learn if you are a suitable candidate for bone grafting. This is your opportunity to ask questions about the treatment, recovery and aftercare.

2

Step two

Placing the Graft

We can place the graft immediately after an extraction or after the extraction site has healed. A small incision in your gum allows us to place the grafting material in the bone.

3

Step three

Allow The Graft to Heal

It can take around 3-9 months for your bone graft to heal. Once the site has healed, we can prepare your mouth for dental implant placement.

4

Step four

Continue Your Treatment

A bone graft will help to increase the bone density in you jaw and help to increase the success rate for dental implants. Once healed, you can prepare for your dental implant treatment.

Your bone graft should be fully healed after 3 to 6 months. We will invite you back to the practice to check on the progress of your bone graft and ensure you are fully informed every step of the way.

After your dental bone graft, avoid disturbing the area. The gum above your bone will be stitched closed and this is best left to heal. You will also need to adjust your diet in the days after treatment to ensure you do not disturb the gums above the bone graft.

A dental bone graft is no more painful than an extraction or dental implant procedure. Your dentist will make sure the area is completely numb before treatment begins. You might have some minor discomfort after the procedure, but this will be easily managed using over the counter pain medication such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Not everyone will require a dental implant bone graft before treatment. We will check your jaw bone density and recommend bone grafting if required.

We recommend drinking clear fluids for 24 hours after your bone grafting procedure and then slowly reintroducing soft foods. This could include mashed potato, yoghurt, soup, eggs or well-cooked vegetables.

Yes, once the graft is placed in your jaw bone, the surrounding bone with fuse to the graft and it will be as study as your natural jaw.

This is a possibility, but it will depend on your individual case. Sometimes the extraction site needs to heal before we can place a bone graft, but some people are ready for the graft straight after extraction. We will explore all of the options with you during your initial consultation.

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure, and the costs will reflect this. However, we offer interest-free payment plans to allow you to spread the cost of your treatment to make it more manageable.
